Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 5: India Wins Six Medals in Athletics and Weightlifting
India produced one of its strongest days yet at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, collecting six medals across athletics and weightlifting. The day also brought finals appearances in gymnastics and swimming, along with more wins in boxing.
Athletics leads the medal rush
India’s athletics campaign delivered three medals on Day 5.
Sharmila won gold in the Women’s Shot Put F57 Final with a best effort of 9.81m. Her season-best performance gave India its first athletics gold of the day.
Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla added bronze in the same event with 7.26m, giving India a second medal in the women’s shot put final.
In the Men’s High Jump Final, Sarvesh Anil Kushare cleared 2.25m to win silver. Aadarsh Ram Jothi Shankar finished 5th with 2.15m, while Tejaswin Shankar recorded NM.
India also had strong qualification performances:
- Murali Sreeshankar qualified for the Men’s Long Jump Final with 8.01m
- Lokesh Sathyanathan also advanced with 7.77m
- Tejas Ashok Shirse qualified for the Men’s 110m Hurdles Final after running 13.76s in Round 1
- Gurindervir Singh finished 28th in the Men’s 100m with 10.39s
Weightlifting adds three more medals
India continued its medal run in weightlifting with three more podium finishes.
Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver in the Women’s 53kg Final with a total of 199kg. Her lift included 88kg in snatch and 111kg in clean & jerk.
Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam secured bronze in the Women’s 58kg Final with 199kg, lifting 87kg in snatch and 112kg in clean & jerk.
Later in the day, Valluri Ajaya Babu claimed silver in the Men’s 79kg Final with a total of 330kg. He also set a Games Record in snatch with 149kg.
Boxing keeps the momentum going
India also had a productive day in boxing.
Sachin Siwach beat William Hewitt of England 4-1 in the Men’s Lightweight 60kg Round of 16. Ankush followed with a 5-0 win over Zalaan Janant in the Men’s 80kg Round of 16. Sakshi then defeated Lethabo Modukanele of Botswana 5-0 in the Women’s 51kg Round of 16.
The only setback came for Sumit, who lost 1-4 to Jon McConnell of Northern Ireland in the Men’s 70kg Round of 16.
Finals in gymnastics and swimming
In artistic gymnastics, Protistha Samanta finished 7th in the Women’s Vault Final with a score of 12.883.
In swimming, Sajan Prakash qualified for the Men’s 200m Butterfly Final with 1:58.59 in the heats and later finished 8th in the final with 1:58.05.
Bowls result
India’s day in bowls ended with a narrow loss. Putul Sonowal went down 0.5-1.5 to Anwar Hamada of Kenya in the Men’s Singles Sectional Play.

Day 5 was a major medal day for India, with six podium finishes across athletics and weightlifting. Sharmila’s gold, Sarvesh Anil Kushare’s silver, and the weightlifting medals from Gyaneshwari Yadav, Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam, and Valluri Ajaya Babu were the standout results, while boxing and swimming also produced encouraging performances.
