Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 8: Seema Wins Bronze as Six Indian Boxers Reach the Semi-Finals

India added another medal to its Commonwealth Games 2026 tally on Day 8 in Glasgow, with Seema winning bronze in the Women's Discus Throw. The day also proved highly successful for Indian boxing, with six boxers winning their quarter-final bouts and advancing to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Tejaswin Shankar continued his decathlon campaign strongly and remained in second place after four events.

Seema wins bronze in women's discus

Seema secured bronze in the Women's Discus Throw Final with a best throw of 58.65m.

Nidhi Rani narrowly missed the podium, finishing 4th with 57.10m.

The bronze marked India's only medal of Day 8.

Six Indian boxers reach the semi-finals

Boxing was the biggest success story of the day, with six Indian boxers winning their quarter-final bouts.

Sakshi opened India's quarter-final campaign with a 5-0 points victory over Caitlin Fryers of Northern Ireland in the Women's Flyweight 51kg category.

Arundhati Choudhary followed with a 3-1 win over Morgan Henderson of New Zealand in the Women's Light Middleweight 70kg quarter-final.

In the men's draw, Sachin Siwach defeated Treasure Moremi of Botswana 5-0 in the Lightweight 60kg quarter-final.

Ankush also recorded a 5-0 victory against Jade Micocks of Seychelles in the Men's 80kg quarter-final.

Narender edged past Michael Sekosam of Samoa 3-2 in the Men's 90+kg quarter-final.

Later, Jaismine defeated Elise Glynn of England 4-1 in the Women's Featherweight 57kg quarter-final.

With their quarter-final victories, all six Indians advanced to the semi-finals and secured at least a bronze medal.

Tejaswin Shankar remains second in decathlon

Tejaswin Shankar continued his impressive Men's Decathlon campaign.

He began the day with 10.96s in the 100m, followed by 7.82m in the long jump and 13.09m in the shot put. He then cleared 2.15m in the high jump and clocked 49.51s in the 400m.

After five events, Shankar had accumulated 4,339 points and sat second overall, keeping himself firmly in medal contention.

Triple jump finalists

India secured two places in the Men's Triple Jump Final.

Praveen Chithravel qualified in second place with 16.41m, while Selva Prabhu Thirumaran advanced after jumping 16.26m.

Shot put: Indians finish inside the top seven

Both Indian finalists competed in the Men's Shot Put Final.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor finished 5th with 20.27m, while Samardeep Singh Gill placed 7th with 20.03m.

Animesh and Vishal miss out on finals

Animesh Kujur finished 17th in the Men's 200m Semi-Final with 20.65s and did not qualify for the final.

In the Men's 400m Semi-Final, Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi clocked 46.33s to finish 14th, also missing out on the final.

Bowls and cycling

India's men's pairs team continued its campaign in bowls with a tie-break victory over Botswana, winning 1-1 after the deciding play.

In the Women's Singles, Nayanmoni Saikia lost 0.5-1.5 to Emma Firyana Saroji of Malaysia.

In track cycling, India's men's team sprint squad finished 7th in qualifying with 46.396s. Lisha Das placed 6th in the Women's C4-C5 4000m Individual Pursuit qualifying round with 6:58.000.

Weightlifting

Martina Devi Maibam finished 5th in the Women's +86kg Final with a total of 245kg, lifting 105kg in the snatch and 140kg in the clean & jerk.

Day 8 summary

India finished Day 8 with one bronze medal, but the day was particularly significant for the boxing contingent. Six Indian boxers — Sakshi, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, Ankush, Narender and Jaismine — progressed to the semi-finals after winning their quarter-final bouts.

In athletics, Seema's bronze provided India's only podium finish, while Tejaswin Shankar's second-place position in the decathlon kept another medal opportunity alive.
