Commonwealth Games 2026: Mirabai Chanu Headlines 11-Member Indian Weightlifting Squad for Glasgow

The 11-member Indian weightlifting contingent for the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, has been officially announced. With a strong historical track record in the sport, India is fielding a highly competitive team consisting of six women and five men, blending experienced international medallists with promising debutants.

The weightlifting events at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place from July 26 to July 30 at the SEC Armadillo.

Mirabai Chanu Returns to Spearhead the Contingent

Olympic medallist and former world champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will lead the Indian challenge. The 31-year-old veteran will compete in the women's 48kg category.

Chanu heads to Glasgow seeking to expand an already decorated Commonwealth Games resume, having secured three medals across previous editions: a gold at Gold Coast 2018 (48kg), a gold at Birmingham 2022 (49kg), and a silver at Glasgow 2014 (48kg). She recently returned to domestic action, capturing the 48kg national title in Modinagar in February. Chanu opted to skip the Asian Weightlifting Championships in May to focus on fully recovering from a shoulder injury sustained earlier in the year.

Returning Medallists Provide Solid Core

Beyond Chanu, the squad is heavily bolstered by athletes who reached the podium at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games:

  • Bindyarani Devi (58kg): The Birmingham 2022 silver medallist (previously in the 55kg category) moves up to the 58kg division for the 2026 edition.
  • Harjinder Kaur (69kg): After claiming a bronze medal in the 71kg category four years ago, Kaur transitions to the 69kg weight class for Glasgow.
  • Lovepreet Singh (+110kg): Anchoring the men's heavyweight division, the Birmingham 2022 bronze medallist will look to upgrade his hardware in the +110kg category.

Fresh Faces Earning Continental Debuts

The selection committee has also provided opportunities for several upcoming national lifters to make their Commonwealth Games debut. In the men’s division, Rishikanta Singh (60kg), Ajaya Babu (79kg), and Dilbag Singh (94kg) will be stepping onto the Commonwealth platform for the first time.

India brings massive momentum into the 2026 tournament, having topped the weightlifting medal standings in both the 2018 Gold Coast Games (nine medals, including five golds) and the 2022 Birmingham Games (10 medals, including three golds).
