Indian Open Throws Competition 2026: Early season test for India's throwers
The 5th Indian Open Throws Competition 2026 was held at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, bringing together many of India’s top throwers along with promising young athletes across age groups.
The meet featured competitions in shot put, discus throw, hammer throw and javelin throw across senior, U20 and U18 categories. As one of the key domestic competitions early in the athletics season, the event provided an important opportunity for athletes to test their form before the upcoming national and international competitions.
Several standout performances highlighted the meet, including Tajinderpal Singh Toor crossing the 20m mark in shot put, Shivam Lohakare producing an 81m javelin throw, and Damneet Singh delivering a strong hammer throw performance beyond 70 metres.
Highlights
- Tajinderpal Singh Toor won the men’s shot put with a best throw of 20.51m, comfortably ahead of the field and continuing his dominance in the event at the national level.
- The men’s javelin throw saw the best mark of the competition as Shivam Lohakare launched the spear to 81.08m, one of the strongest domestic throws recorded early in the 2026 season.
- Damneet Singh produced a massive 70.64m throw in the men’s hammer throw, finishing well ahead of the rest of the competitors and underlining his growing presence in the event.
- In the men’s discus throw, Kirpal Singh topped the field with 58.89m, leading a competitive event where several athletes crossed the 55-metre mark.
- The women’s throwing events also produced strong results, with Nikita Kumari winning the women’s discus throw, while Sanjana Choudhary secured victory in the women’s javelin throw.
- Several U20 and U18 athletes delivered promising performances, reflecting the strong pipeline of young throwers emerging across India.
