Indonesia Open 2026: Arjun-Hariharan Quarterfinal Exit Concludes India's Campaign; Satwik-Chirag Withdraw Due to Injury

The Polytron Indonesia Open 2026, a prestigious BWF Super 1000 event held in Jakarta, concluded for the Indian contingent on June 5, 2026. India’s campaign wrapped up following the quarterfinal exit of the unseeded men's doubles pair, M.R. Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan.

The tournament was heavily impacted by the early withdrawal of India's star doubles tandem, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, owing to an on-court shoulder injury to Satwiksairaj.

Men's Doubles: Arjun-Hariharan Script Inspired Run to the Quarterfinals

With the top-seeded Indian pairs out of the equation early, world No. 30 M.R. Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan shouldered the nation's challenge. The unseeded duo delivered a breakthrough performance by securing their first-ever BWF World Tour Super 1000 quarterfinal appearance.

  • The Campaign: Arjun and Hariharan opened their tournament with a solid victory over Malaysia's Rio 2016 Olympic silver medalist Tan Wee Kiong and his partner Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub. In the Round of 16, they staged a remarkable comeback to upset another higher-ranked Malaysian pair, Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing, winning 16-21, 21-15, 21-19 in a 48-minute encounter.
  • The Quarterfinal Exit: Their inspired run came to a halt on Friday against Malaysia's world No. 8 and seventh-seeded pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin. The Indians lost in straight games, 21-12, 21-10, in a match that lasted 32 minutes, effectively ending India's presence in the tournament.

Major Setback: Satwik-Chirag Forced to Retire

Fresh off their historic title triumph at the Singapore Open the previous week, world No. 4 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty entered Jakarta with high expectations. However, their campaign ended abruptly in the opening round against Malaysia's Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing. Trailing 6-11 in the first game, the duo was forced to retire mid-match after Satwiksairaj sustained a right shoulder injury.

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) subsequently released a statement confirming that the pair withdrew to prioritize rehabilitation and recovery ahead of major upcoming events, including the BWF World Championships scheduled for August in Delhi.

Singles Campaign: Second-Round Exits for Sindhu and Ayush Shetty

India’s singles challenge collapsed entirely on Thursday during the second round of action.

  • Women's Singles: Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu began her tournament with a hard-fought opening-round victory over Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan (25-23, 21-16). However, her run ended in the Round of 16 against world No. 1 and reigning Olympic champion An Se-young of South Korea. Sindhu lost in straight games, 21-17, 21-15, marking her 10th consecutive defeat against the South Korean star. Other Indian entries, Malvika Bansod and Unnati Hooda, bowed out early.
  • Men's Singles: Young sensation Ayush Shetty showed tremendous grit in the opening round, coming from a game down to upset China's world No. 15 Weng Hong Yang 8-21, 22-20, 21-15. In the Round of 16, Shetty's run was halted by Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu, who secured a 16-21, 21-13, 21-14 victory. Senior players Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy failed to progress past the opening round, bowing out on the first two days of the tournament.

Mixed Doubles: Rohan-Ruthvika Stun World No. 20

In the mixed doubles draw, the combination of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde provided a bright spot in the opening round. The Indian duo stunned the world No. 20 pair from Chinese Taipei, Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang, in straight games (21-14, 21-14).

Their campaign concluded in the second round, where they fell to the defending champions and fourth seeds, Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue of France, losing 21-13, 21-12 in 36 minutes. India's other mixed doubles pair, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, exited in the first round.
