New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026: India Secures Four Medals; Shaili Singh and Women's Relay Team Strike Gold

The Indian track and field contingent concluded a highly successful campaign at the New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026 in Chinese Taipei, securing a total of four medals—two golds and two silvers.
The two-day competition, held at the Banqiao Stadium, was upgraded to a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver-level meet for the 2026 season, drawing competitive fields from across Asia and the international circuit. Over the weekend, India's elite athletes delivered key podium finishes alongside significant seasonal and multi-sport qualification benchmarks.
Shaili Singh Clinches Long Jump Title
India opened its gold medal tally on Saturday through 21-year-old long jumper Shaili Singh. Singh registered a best leap of 6.24m to edge out a tight field and capture the women's long jump title. She secured the gold medal just ahead of Vietnam’s Tran Thi Loan, who finished with a silver medal at 6.23m, and Australia’s Zoe Chester, who took bronze with 6.13m.
Women's Relay Team Equals Meet Record
The gold rush continued on the track as the Indian women's 4x100m relay team put together a dominant performance. The quartet, consisting of SS Sneha, Srabani Nanda, Sudeshna Shivankar, and Tamanna, clocked a time of 44.07 seconds to cross the finish line in first place. Their performance equaled the existing tournament meet record, comfortably beating the regional powerhouse Thailand, which settled for the silver medal with a time of 44.68 seconds.
Animesh Kujur Secures Silver and Seals CWG Qualification
In the men's sprinting events, national record holder Animesh Kujur continued his consistent ascent by capturing a silver medal in the men's 200m final on Sunday. The 23-year-old sprinter clocked a season-best timing of 20.47 seconds.
Kujur's mark successfully breached the 20.61-second qualifying standard required for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Kujur finished the race just behind Thailand's Puripol Boonson, who won the gold medal with a lifetime-best time of 20.03 seconds, while Chinese Taipei's Ge Wuyanming claimed the bronze medal in 20.65 seconds.
Tejas Shirse Narrowly Misses Gold in 110m Hurdles
National record holder Tejas Shirse added the second silver medal to India's tally in the men's 110m hurdles. In a razor-thin finish, Shirse clocked 13.58 seconds in the final, missing out on the gold medal by a mere 0.01 seconds. Home favorite Hsieh Yuan-kai of Chinese Taipei claimed the top spot on the podium with a time of 13.57 seconds, while Malaysia’s Mohamad Armin Zahryl Abdul Latif completed the podium in third place with a time of 13.87 seconds.
